Bicycle Lanes

New to downtown Morganton: Bicycle lanes! New along Green and Sterling streets through the downtown district, these bike lanes are 5-feet wide and are designated by a solid white line and stencils of cyclists on the right side of the road. A second line, will soon be in place to better mark the lane. Motorists should not drive in bike lanes. Drivers should use caution crossing the bike lane only to park in designated parking spaces or to turn into a driveway or parking lot. Motor vehicles should not use them as a turn lane or a passing lane.

In North Carolina, the bicycle has the legal status of a vehicle. This means that bicyclists have full rights and responsibilities on the roadway and are subject to the same regulations governing the operation of a motor vehicle, including signaling turns. When stopped at a red light, motorists should yield to bicyclists and pedestrians, and bicyclists should yield to pedestrians.

What will bike lanes do for Morganton?

  • Encourage more people to commute to and through downtown on their bicycles
  • Encourage new bicyclists to ride in Morganton
  • Discourage bicycle riding on sidewalks
  • Provide access to the new Greenway Connector on North Green Street
  • How to safely use bike lanes

  • Wear a helmet (This is state law for children under 16 years of age: read more here)
  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks
  • Ride Predictably:
    • Ride WITH the flow of traffic
    • Obey traffic signals and signs
    • Use hand signals
    • Use caution if riding at night
    • Use headlight, taillights, reflectors and reflective clothing
