Greenway Connector

Phase I is nearing completion! This project along North Green Street will eventually connect Catawba Meadows Park with downtown Morganton. The park will connect to downtown via a one-mile greenway path extending along North Green Street and then along a small tributary to the Catawba River.

Phase I extends the greenway from the Morganton Senior Center into downtown. Phase II will take the greenway along an old creek bed from Phase I to Sanford Drive. Phase III will take the greenway from the creek bed to the currently existing greenway.

By the end of Phase III, the greenway extension will connect Mountain View Elementary School, the Morganton Aquatic Center, the Mountain View Recreation Center, the Morganton Housing Authority and numerous businesses and neighborhoods to downtown Morganton and to Catawba Meadows Park! The Greenway Path is a fully accessible 10-foot-wide paved trail and a tunnel which will enable users to safely cross major roads, such as Sanford Drive.

This connector is a direct result of the Downtown Master Plan. The Main Street Advisory Board requested the connector. North Green Street was the most prominent location and helped clean up a main corridor into downtown. Funding came from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and through federal stimulus funds
