Home in a New Place: Making Loas in Morganton

February - March

“Home in a New Place: Making Laos in Morganton, North Carolina”

Stop by Morganton City Hall to see Katy Clune's exhibit “Home in a New Place: Making Laos in Morganton, North Carolina”.

Clune’s exhibit will be on display in City Hall Feb. 3 through March. Her photography and writing depicts an immigrant community in Morganton, including the family of Toon Phapphayboun, who escaped Laos by swimming across the Mekong River at age 14. The collection explores three realms essential to the Phapphaybouns’ identity in North Carolina: their home and holiday traditions; the family restaurant; and the Buddhist temple they helped to establish.

For the reception, Clune plans to bring additional cultural items such as bowls and clothing that will not remain for the duration of the show.

This exhibit was organized by the Center for the American South, UNC-Chapel Hill and is co-sponsored by the Carolina Asia Center, the Department of American Studies, the Center for Global Initiatives, and the “Food For All: Local and Global Perspectives” steering committee at UNC Chapel Hill.

TGIF: Call for Open Mic Musicians

The TGIF Summer Concert Series is adding a new feature to their weekly Friday night concerts. During the 7 o’clock hour, TGIF concerts will feature an Open Mic for talented local musicians, singer/songwriters. This is an opportunity for budding stars to take to the stage and perform their music to an audience of 1,000+. The Historic Morganton Festival, Inc. offices are accepting applications for entry now through Friday, February 10th. If you are interested in signing up, see the complete details at www.morgantonfest.org. You do not want to miss this opportunity. Following the Open Mic Hour, regularly scheduled bands will take to the stage to play chart topping favorites.

At the culmination of the concert series, one performer/band will be announced as the winner of the TGIF Summer Concert Series Open Mic Night. The winning performer(s) will receive $500 cash and the opportunity to perform a 30 minute set at the Historic Morganton Festival on Friday, September 8 or Saturday, September 9.

“We are excited to open this opportunity to the community at large” says Abby Gentry, City of Morganton Community Events Coordinator. “There are a great number of talented musicians and performers in our community and surrounding counties. Many of them look for opportunities to play at outdoor concerts such as TGIF in order to expand their audiences and perform in a venue such as ours. With the added benefit of potentially winning $500 plus playing at the Historic Morganton Festival, I foresee many artists taking advantage of this opportunity. And you never know, perhaps they’ll be asked back next year for a full set!”

Don’t delay, register for Open Mic Night during the TGIF Summer Concert Series at www.morgantonfest.org. The deadline for entries is Friday, February 10, 2017.

For more information, call the Historic Morganton Festival, Inc. office at 828-438-5252.

Customer Service Seminar

Tuesday, June 6, 2017

The Morganton Downtown Development Association and WPCC Small Business Center is holding a FREE business seminar at CoMMA on Tuesday, June 6 at 11am. We invite all business owners in downtown and beyond to this FREE workshop on “Customer Service”.

When customers shop at your business, return a product, or have a problem with your product or service, the quality of service and atmosphere influence your customer’s attitude and likelihood of future business. Often this takes place when the customer is displeased with your product or service, and wants to deal with the business owner. Providing the highest quality of service can require telling the customer something they do not want to hear.

Your customer wants the best deal and the highest degree of personal service at the same time. Is your company known for these traits?

Invest time with Tim Dannelly, seasoned Sales Trainer and author of Selling The American Dream, and explore some of the secrets of providing Outstanding Customer Service!

Lunch will be provided.

RSVPs are required and must be submitted by the end of day Friday, June 2. To register, visit: https://www.ncsbc.net/workshop.aspx?ekey=560370077
